A habit that spanned more than four decades
Michael always arrived a few minutes before five in the morning.
His old pickup truck would pull up in front of James’s house at exactly the same time every Friday—a routine that had gone on for so many years that neither of them could say when the tradition had actually begun.
James never had to wait for the horn.
As soon as he heard the sound of the engine, he would appear on the porch, holding two fishing rods, a small tackle box, and a thermos filled with coffee his wife had brewed.
The two men would smile at each other.
There was no need to say much.
Some friendships reach a point where silence is worth just as much as conversation.
